James Madison University announced the sudden death of sophomore softball player Lauren Bernett Tuesday.

Bernett, 20, was described by JMU as a high-achieving member of its softball team and a great ambassador of the athletics program.

She had just been named Player of the Week by the Colonial Athletic Conference on Monday.

Bernett played catcher for the JMU softball team and the university said she was a key part of its 2021 Women's College World Series team last year.

Today, Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson announced that Bernett is believed to have died by suicide.

An investigation is ongoing and an official report from the medical examiner's office is pending.
