The YMCA of Central Virginia has received a $2 million gift from the Schewel – Clark family toward a major renovation of the Downtown YMCA.

The YMCA is currently in the early phase of a capital campaign to fund a major renovation of the Downtown facility on Church St. as well as an expansion of the Jamerson Family YMCA in Wyndhurst.

Built in 1956, the Downtown YMCA facility is scheduled for a long‐overdue transformation with a total cost of $11.5 million.

The renovations will provide additional space to serve youth and community health programs.

A new 3‐story, 23,000 square foot addition will replace the current lower portion of the facility facing Church St.

The new space will include a Youth Learning Center, Kids Adventure Zone, Arts Studio, Community Center and Nutritional Teaching Kitchen; as well as a 2‐story fitness center and increased group exercise studios.
