Maximum-Security Inmates Damage Housing Pod in Lynchburg Jail Disturbance

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — More than 14 hours later, a situation involving barricaded inmates at the Lynchburg Jail has been resolved.

Around 6 Tuesday night, Lynchburg police officers responded to the Lynchburg Adult Detention Center.

According to Carrie Dungan, public information officer with LPD, a group of inmates was able to take control over a housing unit; the inmates forced correctional officers out of the housing area and barricaded themselves inside.

Officers surrounded the correctional facility. The Mobile Command Unit, the Tactical Unit and LPD's Crisis Negotiation Team set up outside the facility to establish communications with the inmates and mitigate the situation.

Inmates made no demands, and there were no hostages. The motive behind the incident is not yet clear.

Around 8 Wednesday morning, LPD said the situation at the jail was resolved.
