Roanoke Valley Animal Shelter at Capacity, Will Have to Euthanize Pets

ROANOKE, Va. (WSET) ā€” Roanoke's Regional Center for Animal Care and protection put out an urgent plea. Their kennels are full and now pets' lives are on the line.

The Roanoke Valleyā€™s Animal Shelter said people are not coming in to pick up their animals that ran away. Theyā€™re also finding a surplus of people turning in pets they no longer want post pandemic.

As of Tuesday, a spokesperson said they have about 100 more animals than they normally do, and they've run out of space. When that happens, they said they have to put down animals that have been there longer than 10 days to make space.

"We need the owners who are missing their animals to come pick them up. Do not wait until the end of the hold. I need you to come get them today," Melinda Rector, director of operations for the shelter, said.

For information on adoption you can contact the shelter at mail@rcacp.org or call 540-344-4922.
