Virginia Beach to Open for Recreational Activities by Memorial Day Weekend

Gov. Ralph Northam announced today that beaches in the City of Virginia Beach, including First Landing State Park, will open for recreational activities on Friday, May 22, just in time for the start of the Memorial Day weekend..

Despite large crowds at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront this past weekend, the beaches were officially only open for individual exercise and fishing.

Starting Friday, the beaches will be open for recreational activities such as swimming and sunbathing. However, no large groups, no tents, and no alcohol will be allowed. Parking in the Oceanfront area will be reduced by 50%.

The Mayor of Virginia Beach, Bobby Dyer, says Beach Ambassadors will be on hand to educate beach visitors and to make sure social distancing guidelines are followed. Frequently touched surfaces such as handrails will be cleaned and sanitized frequently.

Northam cautioned visitors to the beach to follow the guidelines and act responsibly.

The Governor has also put together an education task force to look at how to safely reopen schools in the fall, from pre-schools to K-12 to colleges and universities.

Northam commends Virginia's educators for providing virtual learning and meals for students, but says that students would do better back in their classrooms.

Many areas in Virginia will be holding local elections tomorrow. Poll workers will be assisted by members of Virginia's Medical Reserve Corps. All will be wearing PPE and abiding by sanitizing and social distancing guidelines.

Northam reminds Virginians that the virus is still with us and he encourages the use of face coverings while out in public.
