A former City of Salem government employee has been charged with embezzlement.

Kari Janel Williams has been charged with five counts of felony embezzlement.

Salem Police said she was hired by the City of Salem as the Chief Information Officer in November 2015. She was placed on leave in June and was no longer employed by the City of Salem as of July 30, 2019.

According to online court records, Williams was arrested on July 29, 2019.

It lists the offense dates as August 16, 2018; August 23, 2018; and December 6, 2018.

Williams is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon and then have a preliminary hearing at 10:00 a.m. on September 6, 2019.

Police said Patrick Morton has been in charge of the department since she was placed on leave.

According to the city's website, the CIO plans, develops, evaluates, and coordinates the implementation and maintenance of Salem's information technology.

Online court records show that Williams was released on her own recognizance.
