The Veteran Project gives rescue dogs a forever home with local veterans

Our veterans put their lives on the line for our freedom, but when they come back home life can be challenging. A veterans organization is working to give our heroes a little puppy love.

John Hairston and his dog Merle are inseparable.

They're happy, but the road to get here wasn't easy. John served in the Army for eight years. When he came back to civilian life, he faced several challenges.

"I started drinking, and drugs. It was a hard transition,” he said.

Merle also faced challenges as a stray dog on the streets.

"He would get in the road and motorists were swerving and it was a bad situation,” said Laura Larkin, President of the Halifax Dog Squad.

The Halifax Dog Squad saves stray dogs and puppies and secures permanent adoptive homes or rescue for the animals. Larkins helped take Merle off the streets. She noticed how calm and loving he was, so she called Jenny East Cole with The Veteran Project.
