How did this dog end up in Gretna Middle School's yearbook?

A school’s yearbook documents all of the big moments that happened in the past year. In Gretna Middle School’s yearbook, if you take a look at page 32, there are pictures of all of the educators who made a difference in the lives of the students. On the corner of that same page, you’ll also see a furry face who students said made a huge impact on them this year.

Marvel is the arson dog for the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office.

"He walks around and smells, and if he gets the odor of an accelerant, then he sits,” said Deputy Jerry Riggins with the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Riggins is also the School Resource Officer at Gretna Middle School. During the school day, Marvel stays by his side. Students have a special connection with Marvel.

"The kids come in and play with him when they're having a bad day or something, they'll run in and say 'Hey Marvel' and pet him on the way down the hallway,’” Deputy Riggins said.
