6,000 bees rescued from Lynchburg home

Bee specialists have been "busy as bees" in the last week. Thursday a member of Piedmont Beekeepers removed a huge swarm from a home in a neighborhood near Bass Elementary School.

Resident Ronnie Hall says his aunt who lives across the street from him alerted him Thursday afternoon that a bush in his front yard was buzzing. They ended up reaching Piedmont Beekeeper Mark Smith, who set up a special box, cut the branches they were attached to, and placed them on the box to get them to go inside. Smith says there were 6,000 to 8,000 bees in the swarm.

Smith then goes back after dark to pick up the box, when the foragers have returned to the swarm and the bees are all calmed down. He takes them out to a farm and puts them in a hive, where they'll have plenty of pollen and nectar to keep them happy.
