VDOT And Public Works Department Prepare For Winter Storm

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and local public works departments announced that they are ready to respond to this weekend's winter storm.

Winter Storm Watches have been issued for our area and will be in effect Saturday through Sunday evening.

The pre-treatment of major roadways began yesterday and will be completed today.  Crews will be working 12-hour shifts with spreader and plowing operations as needed.

VDOT and police urge residents to stay off of roadways, if possible, as icy conditions are expected.  If travel is necessary, drivers should allow extra time and be mindful of other drivers, spreaders and plows and remind people to never pass a snow plow.

Drivers should have an emergency kit in their vehicles that includes a flashlight, water, jumper cables, cell phone with a charger, water, and blankets.  Cars should be removed from snow routes.

Additionally, be sure to keep your vehicle clear of snow and ice and keep your lights clean.  It is against Virginia law to drive with ice and snow on top of a vehicle.
