June 18, 2018 - Summer officially arrives on Thursday; however, we are already experiencing hotter than normal temperatures.

Dangerously high temperatures can result in heat-related illnesses ranging from heat exhaustion to head cramps and heat stroke.

The Salvation Army is opening cooling shelters to provide rest and water.  No registration is required and no records with the names of visitors will be kept.  People are also allowed to stay as long as they want within the hours offered.

The Roanoke location is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and is located at 724 Dale Avenue.  More information is available by calling 540-343-5335.

The Lynchburg location is open today and tomorrow from 12:00 noon until 6:00 p.m. and the shelter is located at 2211 Park Avenue.

Be sure to check on the elderly and bring pets inside and provide plenty of water for them.
