The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Lynchburg area and a Winter Weather Advisory for the Roanoke area in effect from 1:00 pm Friday, Jan. 10 through 7:00 am on Saturday, Jan. 11.

The Lynchburg area can expect heavy snow with accumulations between 3 and 5 inches, with some locally higher amounts possible.

In both areas, roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Plan on slippery road conditions. Hazardous conditions could impact the Friday evening commute.

ABC13 - WSET Chief Meteorologist George Flickinger has more on Friday's snow:

HEAVIEST SNOW is between Friday 7 p.m. to midnight, then snow ends before Saturday 7 a.m.

SLOW ACCUMULATION as this is dry snow, and the snow rate per hour is low.

SNOW TOTALS are slightly higher for Southside, 2" to 4".

ROANOKE continues to be a in “snow hole” as the higher terrain around the Star City gets more snow, 1" to 3".

MOUNTAINS GET MORE snow, with higher amounts in the mountains of Bedford, Amherst, and Nelson counties.

SNOW WILL STICK to roads.

SNOW WILL BE EASIER TO SHOVEL AND PLOW as it’s drier snow. But as soon as cars drive over the snow, the tires' friction creates warmth, and snow becomes slippery.

ROAD CONDITIONS WILL BE THE WORST on Friday night and Saturday morning.

More frigid temperatures are ahead next week.
