The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a Winter Storm Warning for our area starting at noon on Sunday, Jan. 5 through Monday evening.
Heavy mixed precipitation expected with total snow accumulations between 1 and 5 inches and ice accumulations up to four-tenths of an inch are possible across Virginia.
Ice accumulation on power lines and tree limbs may cause scattered power outages.
Hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning and afternoon commutes.
Here's more from ABC13 - WSET Chief Meteorologist George Flickinger:
The first winter storm of the season will move across Virginia late Sunday and Monday.
The storm is coming in colder and wetter -- Higher snow totals, but also more ice.
Due to sleet and freezing rain, this will not be a “fun” snow for many of us.
Your snow could be buried under sleet and freezing rain by Sunday night.
Adding water (sleet and freezing rain) to snow, compresses it and lowers the snow depth.
A degree or two will make a huge difference in the amount of snow you get vs a wintry mix.
LYNCHBURG AND ROANOKE are in the 1” to 3” snow range, but it could be more if we stay cold overhead. Either way, the snow will get compacted under sleet and freezing rain.
NEW RIVER VALLEY will be slippery with snow, then sleet and freezing rain on top of it.
You can expect precipitation for 12 to 18 hours once it begins. Snow at first, changing to sleet, then freezing rain into Monday morning. You may get a precip break Monday morning, then snow redevelops Monday afternoon as temperatures drop overhead.
