The Liberty University Flames kicked off their home game against East Carolina University at Williams Stadium Saturday evening at the scheduled time of 6:00 pm.

But about a minute and a half in, the game had to be suspended due to lightning and an incoming thunderstorm.

The teams waited out the series of storms and officials set an 11:00 pm deadline for the game to resume or else it would be canceled.

Just in time, at 10:45 pm, the game resumed, although most of the 20,000 fans originally in attendance at the sold out game had already gone home.

About a thousand die-hard Flames fans came back for the late night game that saw Liberty down 17-7 at the half, just after midnight, and down 24-21 at the end of the 3rd quarter, about 1:00 am.

But Liberty came back in the 4th to beat the ECU Pirates, 35-24, finishing the game at about 2:00 am.

Liberty is now 4-0 for the season.

The Flames' next game is at Appalachian State on Sat., Sept. 28.

Their next home game will be on Tuesday, October 8 at 7:00 pm.
