BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — While no fatalities have been reported, Bedford County authorities are now reporting three injuries.
An apparent tornado struck the Crockett Road area off Rt. 221 near Virginia Memorial Park around 7:30 Friday morning.
The first call reporting damage in the area came in at 7:43 a.m. Multiple agencies responded to the scene to conduct "hasty" searches -- quick searches looking for survivors.
Bedford County leaders say three minor injuries have been reported so far. They drove themselves to the hospital for treatment, according to Abby Johnson, Deputy Chief of Operations for Bedford County Fire & Rescue. No first responders have been injured.
Several residential neighborhoods suffered catastrophic structural damage, county officials say; in total, approximately 45 structures were damaged.
Deputy Chief Johnson says multiple structures were down to the foundation with debris scattered about. She called it "catastrophic losses."
She continued that of the damage reports they've received, they have been mostly "catastrophic" or "significant."
A temporary shelter has been set up at the Bedford County Fire & Rescue, Goode Station, at 9261 Forest Road, for those who have been displaced. Any residents who need travel assistance to the shelter, or some other weather-related assistance, should call 540-586-7665.
The area of Bethany Church Circle is closed as first responders search and clean up the area. Bedford County Sheriff Mike Miller is urging residents to stay away from the area and let the "professionals do their jobs." Extra deputies are on 221 directing traffic.
