LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — A Flash Flood Warning has been issued for Lynchburg and areas to its west until 1:15 Thursday morning due to the potential for a dam breach upstream, according to the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service says dam operators at the College Lake Dam reported its potential for failure at 1:09 p.m.
"Life threatening flash flooding from the potential failure of the College Lake Dam," was listed as a hazard in the alert from the NWS. Lynchburg is the nearest town downstream from the College Lake Dam along Blackwater Creek. Anyone in the area should be prepared for flooding.
"If a complete failure of the dam occurs, the water depth in the channel of Blackwater Creek at Lynchburg could reach 17 feet in seven minutes," the NWS alert continued.
