YMCA of Central Va Offers Childcare for Hospital Workers, Streaming Classes

During the COVID-19 shutdown of fitness and recreational facilities, the YMCA of Central Virginia is pivoting its service offerings so that essential hospital personnel will have child care during a time when families scramble to find reliable care for their kids. This group includes medical providers, first responders, and other essential workers that are employed by Centra.

“We are grateful to those who are working to serve our community during these unprecedented times, so we are stepping up to support those working on behalf of all of us.” Jay Parker, President & CEO of the YMCA of Central Virginia. “Showing up for our community is what we do best. We’re honored to do what we do best to help families across our region.”

In addition to child care, the Y is shifting work to support critical needs in the community:

  • Live streaming classes and providing support so at risk members can participate in health sustaining programs and support groups
  • Making well-being calls to most vulnerable members, especially seniors
  • Hosting blood drives to help replenish desperately needed supply
  • Offering free online group fitness classes and resources for the community via our website, YouTube channel and FaceBook Page
  • YMCA is a drop off point for the local food bank
