Va. Daily Update: COVID-19 Cases Now 219, Third Death Reported

The Virginia Department of Health says there are 219 active cases of coronavirus/COVID-19 in the state, up 67 from yesterday. The VDH also reports a third death from COVID-19, a Fairfax man in his 60s.

Governor Ralph Northam cautioned Virginians that this outbreak and all the measures to contain and mitigate it will go on for several months, not weeks. He says an announcement about schools will be made on Monday, March 23, 2020.

The State Department of Corrections reports that, as of now, no inmates in the state have tested positive and that distancing and basic health precautions continue at facilities. Visitation has been suspended, but inmates are allowed two free phone calls weekly.

The Governor has asked hospitals to stop doing any elective procedures. He encouraged Virginians to work from home and use tele-health services where possible.

Northam reminded localities that any restaurant in violation of the 10-person rule must be shut down.

The Governor has also reached out to companies and CEO's across to Virginia to help produce more Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) for medical staff and first responders. A shipment of masks, gowns, and gloves was distributed to state medical facilities on Saturday.

Northam urged all Virginians to stay at home as much as possible."You have the responsibility to help slow this virus. It's up to all of us to act responsibly," he said.
